Our History
Journeying as a Catholic community, we embrace the mission of Jesus Christ, striving to live and spread Jesus' message of love, sharing our gifts through discipleship, liturgical celebration, spiritual formation and outreach.
Our parish was established by Bishop John J. Russell on June 8th, 1959. In January 1960, there were 350 families registered in the parish. Sunday Mass was celebrated in the auditorium of Bon Air Public School. Ground was broken in February 1961 for a church/school building to cost $233,000. The building was dedicated in December 1961 and Mass was celebrated in what was once called Father Herbert Hall in the school building.
In 1973, St. Augustine parish was established and included an area taken from the limits of St. Edward. In June 1976, our church was divided again when the Church of the Epiphany was established. Due to continued growth, families in the Powhatan area began attending St. John Neumann parish which was established in 1986. Then in August 1997, St. Gabriel parish was established with 200 families transferring from St. Edward.
In September 1975, ground was broken for the current worship space which was then dedicated in October 1976. The 1990 census had grown to include 2,517 families. Due to continued growth, the church building was renovated beginning in September 1999 under the direction of Father Ron Ruth and his committee. In August 2000, the new space was dedicated with interior renovation/completion in 2005. The anniversary of the dedication of the church was celebrated June 2009, to celebrate fifty years of active participation of parishioners in this Bon Air area parish.
Now with approximately 3,500 families, St. Edward Catholic Church continues to look to the future with those seeking to bring Christ's message of love and service to our parish, community, and world.
