Liturgical Ministry

liturgical ministers

Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion  (EMHC)

This is one of the most important ministries in the Roman Catholic liturgy. They are trained to share the Body and the Precious Blood of Christ with the worshipping assembly on Saturdays/Sundays, weekdays, holy days, at sacramental celebrations (First Communion, Confirmation), and funerals.

Altar Ministers

Altar Ministers assist the presider and other liturgical ministers during the liturgy.

Sacristans

Sacristans prepare the bread, wine, vessels, and linens for the liturgy, as well as clean and store them for the next liturgy.

Lectors

While the gospel is always read by a priest or deacon, the Old and New Testaments are read by Ministers of the Word (lectors). God speaks to the assembly through them, and the impact of God's message will depend significantly on conviction, preparation, and delivery. The lector has the responsibility for not simply reading the words, but also assisting the assembly to hear the Word. Ministers of the Word are trained to share the Word of God with the worshipping assembly on Saturdays/Sundays, weekdays, holy days, at sacramental celebrations (First Communion, Confirmation), and funerals.

Ushers

Ushers have the following responsibilities:

  • greet worshippers prior to Sunday and Holy Day services
  • distribute Orders of Worship
  • assist parishioners and guests being seated
  • collect the financial gifts of the assembly during the Offertory
  • guide communicants to the altar to receive Eucharist.
